Happy accident or not, you’ve stumbled across my blog page. Welcome!
I’m Cailey, and as of this time in writing I am a second year Civil Engineering student doing a conjoint degree with Arts (I major in Japanese – for all those who are curious!)
Hopefully through my future posts you are able to get a glimpse of what studying Civil Engineering is like to help you decide whether the specialty is for you, as well as some advice on how to not just survive, but do well in Part 2 Civil Engineering for those who are already set with wanting to pursue the specialisation. Lastly, for any potential conjoint students thinking of specialising in Civil, I hope to portray that it is possible to do six papers for a semester and not to be discouraged from pursuing Civil just because of the workload.
To kick things off, I thought a more interesting way to introduce myself would be through a Q&A style so you don’t have to read through blocks of writing and it’s more of a snappy pace.
Let’s get started!
♨ Favorite way to relax?
Put on Friends or B99, bury myself under the blankets if it’s winter, and really just laze around. With the stress and workload of university, there’s always something that needs to be done. So at least for a few precious hours, not worrying about deadlines and taking a breather is one of my favorite ways to relax.
😰 🌅Have you ever pulled an all-nighter?
Nope – and props to people that can (not that you should; although understandably, there are instances where you may have to. But please prioritize your health and sleep, it’s important!). The latest I’ve ever been up doing university related work was at 2:30am for one of the ENGGEN115 group project reports. Otherwise I try to get to bed before midnight.
✨ Any particular hobbies or interests?
Reading, definitely! Interestingly the past few years I began to enjoy more non-fiction books, whereas before I would only read fiction (is it an age thing???). A non-fiction book I read this year and highly recommend is Michelle Obamas memoir, “Becoming.” A powerful, powerful book, and she just writes with such finesse and candor. Otherwise fitness (#thatgymlife) is also something I enjoy doing; and those endorphins after hitting the gym? The best feeling.
🦸 If you could be really good at one thing, what would it be?
If it were to be non-academic and purely for personal interest it would be picking up languages. It really is a way to better understand the cultural nuances that can shape one’s opinions and ideas.
🛠 Consulting or contracting?
Truthfully one isn’t better than the other. The two offer different opportunities so the skills and experiences are unique. In short, I would like to be involved in both during some stage of my engineering career.
📝 Are you the type to have a “Where do I see myself in 10 years” plan, and if so, what is it?
Not at all! I do have a “What I want to accomplish before graduating” list of activities I want to do and opportunities to try out for, but it’s constantly changing. Similarly, within a 10-year time span, interests and goals will change and opportunities will spontaneously present themselves so I can’t specifically plan where I would want to be and what I want to be doing.
🍽🥢 What’s your favourite food?
That’s a tricky one- I don’t really have a favourite? I like most foods and am the type of person to try a different thing on the menu every time I return to a restaurant. If I kind of dodged the question there, well… 🤷♀️
That’s it for today, folks.
Until next time! 💬
